Here is a recipe for classic salt dough ornaments.
Children can help with measuring, pouring and mixing and kneading dough. This can get sticky and messy so have some warm water and paper towel close by.
Measuring cup, Large Bowl, paper towels and/or wet wipes, cookie cutters, baking sheets, baking paper (or floured surface), straw or knife.
2 cups of flour , 1 cup of salt , 1 cup of warm tap water
1. Mix salt and flour in large bowl.
2. Add in half a cup of water, mix, then gradually add the remaining water.
3. Knead mix until smooth, might take up to 10 minutes. (let the kids try!)
4. Roll out the dough on baking paper and cut out shape or create your own shapes like napkin holders, candle holders and wreaths (takes longer to bake)
5. Poke a hole with a straw or cut one out with a knife so you can later hang your ornament.

Set oven to 325 Fahrenheit = 165 Celsius
Time: 45 – 60 minutes – remove from oven to cool down and finish drying for a few hours (best overnight)

Paint ornaments with colorful paints (I reccomend child safe, non toxic paints) For slightly older children you can try acrylic paints* although I find these stain clothes and smell a bit! I do not reccomend watercolors as they will make the dough a bit soggy.
Another fun thing is to glue on buttons, beads, snippits of yarn etc…
Save your work: Coat ornaments with acrylic varnish once paint and glue has dried. This will keep ornaments for years to come! This is best done just by an adult when the children are doing some other activity.
*Please be mindful of your child’s safety when doing this or any other art/craft activity. Small children love to mouth dough and small parts out of curiosity so if your child is very interested in eating her/his creations check out these projects.
