Positive Parenting in Action: E-book Review & Giveaway

Positive Parenting in Action: E-book Review & Giveaway

Today I am sharing a review on the E-book: Positive Parenting in Action.

The book is aimed at parents of children 0-6 years. Enter to win a copy of the E-book below.

If you have ever felt a bit out of options knowing that time-outs and punishments are not really helpful in promoting learning and reducing “misbehavior” in children but you are often wondering how to make positive parenting work for your family on a day-to-day basis you may be interested in this book.

The book was written by two moms, Rebecca Eanes & Laura Ling.  Both moms have been researching and practicing positive parenting philosophy and know first-hand about using positive parenting tools so they joined together to write all about how to put positive parenting into work in daily life.

The book, Positive Parenting in Action, was written specifically to share with other parents how this parenting philosophy works from the basics of attachment and connection to handling the most challenging moments. From toddlers that climb, climb and climb some more to the preschooler who is whining a whole lot, to the five year old that calls mom stupid,  the book has not only concrete suggestions but 42 scenarios that illustrate real situations you may face as a parent. The solutions offered put all the principles of positive parenting to work using no punishments, no rewards and no shame.
For example, in the section about aggression and hitting, the very helpful suggestions on how to handle a three year old that is hitting baby sister include:
Set a limit. (“I won’t let you hit.”)
Offer empathy and acceptance of her feelings. (“You are disappointed”)
Let her discharge her feelings by crying with your comfort.
Help her explore ways to shift her mood.
The book goes on to explore these alternatives and the reasons behind the behavior in an easy to follow and very helpful format.

Although the book is full of really helpful scenarios, Positive Parenting in Action is not written as a gimmicky “solve all your problems now” type of book. It’s not full of empty promises either. Instead, the book gives background, guidance and potential solutions. The book is not written to make you feel guilty about past parenting choices either. Becky and Laura have done a wonderful job in translating the philosophy of positive parenting and tools into really helpful scenarios that can really inspire parents to re-think how to approach those supermarket meltdowns, messy rooms, and other challenging moments in a really kind and supportive way.

  1. I would love to receive a copy of the book. I’ve just recently found Positive Parenting methods on Facebook and would love to learn ways to apply that with my very energetic three year old son and my clingy one year old. Growing up in a spanking household, it’s been very hard for me to start implementing other parenting styles and we’ve been through the gamut. Timeouts, planned ignoring, whew! I need some guidance.

  2. This is very timely as my 16 month old is starting to exert her will in ways that are not always safe for her. Positive Parenting feels like the right approach so I want to learn how to best put it into action.
    Thank you!

  3. I would like to win a copy of this book. Being a military mom, you don’t always have the help a dad can provide. Patience usually runs thin.. More so with 2 kids that are 16 months apart. I want to live by example and continue to provide my children w positive attachment parenting. This book will help give me new ideas.

  4. I want to learn how to discipline in a proactive way. I have lots of anxiety about how to discipline effectively. The methods used in this book give me hope, that I will patent positively. Knowledge is power.

  5. My daughter is almost 6 months old, and is really just beginning to show her will. My husband and I gave been reading a lot about positive parenting, and it makes the most sense to us. I would love to be well equipped with this book in my tool belt as my daughter gets older.

  6. HavIng issues with a spirited but sweet as pie 22 yr old and would like to put more gentle but effective tools in our parenting toolbox:)

  7. I’d like to win so I do right by my little girl whose 10 month birthday is today. Plus I need a parenting book to read that I feel motivated to read so the wife stops making suggestions.
    -Scott

  8. I have been eyeing this book for awhile and think it would be a great help with my almost 3 year old. I really need some effective, yet positive, methods to use with him. Great giveaway!

  9. Hey there! I have been practicing positive discipline for some time now. I have two boys 6 and 3 and could really use a refresher and some new ideas. I TRY really hard not to yell, but find myself doing it more than I should. I owe it to my boys to read great reads like this!!!!!

  10. Hi. I’d love to win a copy of this book. I found the Positive Parenting on FB, through a friend, and have learned so much in such a brief time. I’d love to have a copy to read (over and over) so i may have assistance in guiding my 33 month old a successful way forward. Thank you, Kelly.

  11. I have a 20 month old, extrovert! I need as much help as I can get!

  12. I really like to lead by example. There are behaviors I would like to pass onto my 22mo son, friends and family. The way I react to him, his actions and emotions will be embedded in him for the rest of his life. It’s important to me to show him love, patience, encouragement and understanding. I have the want and know the right direction just not a real idea of how to get there.

  13. I’d love to read it so I can arm myself with suggestions before a major issue hits! Thanks!

  14. I would love to win a copy of Positive Parenting in Action! I have a 1 year old daughter and a 3 year old son, and I am always looking for new ways to be gentle, yet firm with them. My son is strong-willed, and he keeps us on our toes. What works one day, does not work the next, and I am hopeful this book can give me some positive tools that will help my children to grow into confident and happy young adults! Please help!

  15. I would love to win this book! I love reading parenting books to help me to continue to improve my parenting skills. I would love help with ways to handle the times my 4 year old is rough or unkind to my 1 year old.

  16. I would love to win a copy of this book. I have a very energetic 16 month old that is challenging to handle and whines A LOT. With no family around and the lack of positive parenting in my own childhood, i need all the help i can get. This book would be a great start.

  17. I’d love to win a copy of this book as the whole concept of positive parenting is new to me. My little one is only 8 months old but I’m already concerned about discipline as I grew up in a spanking household. Although I know I don’t want to go that route, I can’t fathom how one raises ‘good’ children without.

  18. I would like to win this book as my toddler is in the very middle of terrible twos, which I sometimes don’t have more ideas how to handle. He wants to have it his way, basically everything – from eating to finger painting (yes, it’s really boring to paint on the paper), and most of my redirections are welcomed by “no” or whining, or tantrum.

I try to do positive parenting, but perhaps don’t have enough insights into these methods as it doesn’t seem to work so well with my son. E.g. giving a choice: do you want to eat soup or rice with meat for lunch? – No, cookie. – Cookie is not an option. Rice or soup? – Cookie. –
Well, he stays hungry. But this leads to more whining and demands… vicious circle. I could really use some tips from the book.

  19. I have been following your page for a little while now and your articles n blogs have help me immensely.
I would like to win this book to get more knowledge and confidence and skills with positive parenting to assist me with my very head strong 3 yo daughter whom I love dearly and struggle to understand.
The situation i mist want help with is – My daughter lashes out at me. Hits me and bits me – often in public. When I try to talk calmly to her she spirals into a full on melt down and just screams and screams. I find this so distressing.
I would like to win to arm myself with as many tools as possible. I have six month old and I would like to do positive parent properly with him from the beginning so I dintvhavecthe problems I am in now.

  20. I really need this book because I believe strongly in positive parenting. I have twin toddler boys that need me to set more limits and I’m not sure how. One loves to climb and the other loves to whine!

    Thanks – Megan

  21. I would love to win this e-book because I’m always looking for more positive parenting advice. The concept really feels natural to me, but I feel that I need to work on myself more than my daughter. I’m hard wired to yell and be impatient and that impedes the positive parenting a bit.

  22. I’m trying to learn these principles so I can put them into practice with my one year old son. The book would be a great help to give me the knowledge to be proactive.

  23. I so need this! Have felt like a failure as a parent lately – my 2 year old (almost 3) has been asserting her will & flat-out refusing to co-operate with anything! At times I am completely at a loss as to what action to take – it’s not a nice feeling. I don’t want to raise a brat, but neither do I want to yell or smack. I really need some real-life positive parenting techniques…. please 🙂

  24. I would LOVE this book! I am a parent of four; ages 8, 7, 3, and 1. I am also a marriage and family counselor and work with children often, and try to help parents improve their relationships and parenting with their children. This book would be useful both personally and professionally!

  25. I would really like to read this book, focusing on positive rather then negitive parenting is a hug + in our house hold. Our 16 month our is a very well behaviored little man, but I am finding some things difficult. Being able to find some POSITIVE answers rather then just showing the negitive in me would really help.

  26. Love to have a copy of this book, a with five kids between 8y and 5 months, living abroad, a lot of changes behind us, sometimes it’s hard to find a positive way to parent them 🙁 I could really need some inspiration…

  27. I would love to have this book so that I can begin positive parenting with my 7 month old and continue using the skills as he grows. I think the resource will be helpful in retraining me and getting me used to a different style of parenting than I have witnessed in my family.

  28. I would love to read this book! Always looking for ways to positive parent and with a 2 and a 4 year old (one who is very strong willed and one who is searching and finding his independence already) I need all the encouragement and knowledge I can find on parenting them in love! I’m all about reading scenarios! They help me so much in the daily grind! I’m also a big reader and would share this book with lots of other mommies!!

  29. We have a very spirited 33 month old son and while we do our best to follow a positive parenting philosophy in raising him, we sometimes find ourselves in a situation where we’re just dumbfounded by his actions and don’t know the best “kind but firm” way to move forward. Always eager to learn more…

  30. I would love to recieve this book as I believe knowledge is powerful and it would help me teach and empower teen moms that I help and can give them more hope.

  31. I would love a copy of this book. I work with separated parents often with very young children (not to mention 2 of my own.) I would like to have some concrete examples to share with my clients.

  32. It would be wonderful to get this book! I have a 15month old daughter who is pushing lots of boundaries and exerting her lovely will. I have got a kid who knows what she wants and doesn’t want and really does not like to have things taken away…. when I am extra tired from nursing her all night, I find I forget to take patience, take a deep breath and approach her opinions and ideas with kindness, and remember to explain to her that its okay to be mad with me, I would probably be mad to if in her shoes, but throwing moms cell phone in the garbage is not a game. Sigh….

  33. As a mother of a 3y/o and 6 m/o and also a teacher, this book would be very helpful I was raised the “old fashion way” and as much as I love my parents I don’t want the same for my children, I want them to know that they can have a voice and that they will be heard, also I want them to be respectful and responsible in every situation and learn to handle difficult situations. But I also need to educate myself in this matter, I have read some books and articles about positive parenting but having this book would be very helpful in raising our happy family. 🙂

  34. ****And the book goes out to….Heather Brown*****
